The peace game, Metapontum, was designed by H. Th. Frenkel,
a former lecturer of Hindu philosophy at New York State University,
aged 64. He began developing the peacegame in 1977, after trying to
correct incorrectly positioned pieces of a chessgame, using their official
moves. The rules of the chess game do not permit this.
This paradox led to his idea to transform the game by
creating a six sided honey-comb shaped chess board which would give
the pawns, that block each other on the chess board, more freedom of
movement. He then completed the peacegame by turning the rules upside
down. Later he discovered that a similar peace (chess)game had been
played in Pythagoras's mystery school. Also Plato's Republic, More's
Utopia and H. Hesses Glass Bead Game describe it.
Frenkel renounced his lectorship to promote his metapontum
game worldwide.
